I’m running because I am like so many other parents in the district, I felt my voice was not being heard and my kids, our kids need better. I have watched my children struggle in varying degrees under the recent Covid restrictions but more than just that, I am concerned for the future of our children and the focus of their education. I know they need strong technical skills to compete in the world they are inheriting from us, this include math, reading, writing and science! I am concerned that so much focus is placed on things that should be taught in families or at a minimum, have a consensus from families in how they are taught. How they view others based on race, religion or other factors is not the responsibility of the school system to teach -they are not the moral authority for society. The focus of education should be knowledge and preparation for their future.
Comprehensive Sexual Health Education is a law, passed by the voters of Washington State, but we have a say in how it is implemented, and the school board members will be pivotal in this. As with other moral issues, I believe this is better taught in the home and that the school system should not stray more from strict biology than what the law requires.
I want to be the voice for the many quiet parents who are hard working and entrust the school district to act in the best interest of their children. So often, as with the voting on the return of children to full time school this past school year, the board has acted in opposition to the voice of the parents and students. I will ensure you are heard at a minimum and be a strong advocate for common sense and ensuring that your concerns are heard, and proper action is taken where at all possible.
